The Challenge

Multi-vendor labs create multi-vendor problems.

When your sample prep comes from one supplier and your analytical instruments from another, every gap in the workflow is a gap in accountability.

Downtime Costs

When your crusher is down and your XRF sits idle, two different service teams point at each other. Your samples queue up. Your results are late.

🔗

Integration Gaps

Sample prep equipment and analytical instruments designed in isolation create workflow bottlenecks. Throughput is only as fast as your weakest link.

📋

Split Accountability

Multiple suppliers, multiple service contracts, multiple points of contact. When results don’t add up, who owns the problem?

The Complete Workflow

From rock sample to analytical result.

Every rock that arrives at your lab follows the same path — receive, dry, crush, pulverise, prepare and analyse. Wirsam supplies the right equipment for every step, with the decision points that matter clearly mapped out.

Step 01Receive

Sample from Site

Samples typically arrive as a mixture of stones and sand straight from site, ready to enter the preparation workflow.

Step 02Dry

Sample Dried in Oven

Moisture is removed by drying the sample in stainless steel oven trays, ensuring consistent, repeatable preparation downstream.

Step 03Crush & Split

Crushing & Sample Splitting

Samples are crushed down and split into representative sub-samples. There are two routes — choose based on your throughput, budget and working environment.

AutomaticCrushed from 70 mm down to a minimum of 2 mm, with a Rotating Sample Divider (RSD) connected directly to the crusher.✓ Less dust
✓ Less hassle
✓ Less time
ManualA lower-cost approach using separate crushing and splitting, suited to labs with lower sample volumes.✓ Less cost
− More dust
− More time

Step 04Pulverise

Milled / Pulverised to 75 Microns

The crushed sample is milled down to 75 microns. Different bowl materials and sizes are available to suit different sample types. A Down Draft Table is recommended — it provides dust extraction to work with and clean pulveriser bowls safely.

Step 05Verify

Verify the Pass Rate

A Sieve Shaker or Air Jet Sieve confirms the sample has reached the required fineness. Crusher and mill pass rates can be verified and optimised, protecting the integrity of every downstream result.

Step 06Prepare

Prepare for Analysis

How the sample is prepared depends on your chosen analytical technique — wet chemistry (AAS / ICP-OES) or X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

For AAS & ICP-OESA Digestion Block or Microwave Digestion system speeds up and automates the digestion process. A Fume Cupboard is recommended to handle acidic fumes and maintain a safe working environment.
For XRFA Fusion Fluxer creates glass beads — removing the sample matrix and improving XRF readings. Alternatively, a Pellet Press is a cost-effective option for labs with a small diversity of sample matrixes.

Step 07Analyse

Analyse the Elements of Interest

The prepared sample is measured on the instrument best matched to your elements, concentrations and matrixes — AAS, ICP-OES or XRF. See the comparison below to choose the right technique.

Choosing Your Technique

Three ways to measure your elements.

The right analytical technique depends on the elements you need, their concentrations and your sample matrix. Wirsam supplies and supports all three.

AAS

Atomic Absorption

Analyses elements of interest in the sample. Different lamps are required for different elements — a focused, cost-effective option for targeted element work.

ICP-OES

Optical Emission

Analyses elements of interest in the sample and can measure most elements simultaneously — ideal for multi-element analysis across a wide concentration range.

XRF

X-Ray Fluorescence

Analyses elements of interest in the sample. Different crystals and configurations are required for different elements and matrixes — paired with fused beads or pressed pellets for the best results.
