AAS measures one element at a time and is cost-effective for routine analysis. ICP-OES measures multiple elements simultaneously, making it faster and better suited for high-throughput multi-element work.
AAS and ICP-OES can analyse most metallic and some non-metallic elements. ICP-OES typically covers 70+ elements from lithium to uranium.
Both techniques work with liquid samples. Solids must be dissolved via acid digestion, fusion or microwave digestion. Common types include water, soil, food, geological materials and industrial products.
Flame AAS is faster and simpler, suitable for ppm-level analysis. Graphite furnace AAS achieves ppb-level detection limits for small or trace samples, but is slower.
